Volunteer Today!
The Bellevue Emergency Medical Services team (Bellevue EMS for short and also often called Bellevue Ambulance) was founded in 1972 and since that time has been staffed entirely by volunteers. Our members selflessly take time from their families, jobs, and daily activities to provide assistance to the citizens and visitors of Bellevue and surrounding areas.
The Bellevue EMS team provides medical care and transportation for Bellevue and surrounding areas. We are dispatched by the Jackson County Emergency 911 operators. We transport patients to Jackson County Regional Health Center in Maquoketa, Dubuque Hospitals, and occasionally to other area hospitals depending on their requests and the level of care they require.
Bellevue EMS responds to emergency calls 24 hours a day 7 days a week, 365 days a year. We have two ambulances which are always ready to respond to any emergency. To ensure proper coverage and fast response times we have developed an efficient well-structured system.
The EMS members are broken down into 2 or 3 member response teams. Each team consists of at least two certified EMTs and ocassionally a paramedic. During the week and weekends there is a rotating schedule of teams on call. This team is responsible for all calls between the hours of 6:00 PM and 4:00 AM.
Outside of these hours, there is an "open page" for all EMS Members. This means that whoever is available should respond to an emergency call. For some calls, such as motor vehicle accidents, additional members may be asked to respond in addition to those who are already on call.
In addition to responding to emergency calls, members are required to attend monthly meetings held on the third Monday of each month. During these meetings we discuss calls during the previous month for training and quality improvement purposes (always keeping confidentially a high priority), discuss EMS team business, share information and formal training.
Being a member of the Belleue EMS team is not all about lights and sirens, but rather about providing assistance to citizens and visitors of the Bellevue and surrounding areas. Although volunteers, all of our members are professionals, dedicated to providing the best care possible to their patients as they are transported to the hospital for further treatment.
